As a parent, one of your greatest dreams is to see that your child achieves theirs. Poor workers blame their tools. As school counselors, we are trained to help your child reach their full potential. There is a common misconception that the only role of a school counselor is to help students get into college. Every day, students face challenges - tough classes, peer pressure, as well as family and personal concerns (American School Counselors Association). At Samuel Beck, we work to help children help themselves throughout these challenges. Although we attempt to ensure that all parents and students are informed about the various aspects of our program, some of you may be unaware as to what we do each day. It is our hope that parents and students will understand our role and consider us a useful and valuable resource throughout a child's education at Samuel Beck. The primary ways we work with students include. • Classroom Guidance - Counselor visits each class once a 6 weeks for approximately thirty minutes. Some of the topics students will have an opportunity to explore will Healthy Relationships, Internet Safety, Bullying Prevention, Substance Abuse Awareness and Prevention, Healthy Choices(Emotional), and 'It's Your Body.' • Small Group Counseling - Counselor meets with students who share common concerns during 'Lunch Bunches' as identified through the RtI process. This process works best for 3rd grade and older students. Students younger have a difficult time concentrating on Group and eating. Some of these student concerns include anger, family changes, self-concept, study skills, and friendship skills. Students must have parent permission before they can participate in the small groups. • Individual Counseling - Counselors are available to talk with a student privately for personal issues the child does not wish to share in a group or classroom setting. 2 NEWBERG PUBLIC SCHOOLS Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Framework Comprehensive developmental school guidance and counseling is a program, not. Students may self-refer, or a parent or teacher may refer them to speak with her. Individual counseling at Samuel Beck does not replace therapy for students. Rather, it is meant to offer students a safe, confidential place to share concerns. In addition to working with students, I am also available to work with parents and teachers. I have found when students are having academic, behavioral, emotional, or social difficulties, collaboration between the teacher, counselor, and parents is often most helpful for students. If you have any questions or concerns that you would like to speak to me about, please feel free to call or e-mail me.
